Happy New Year - A 2021 Update on Kids of Karendow...and Quiz Babies

Hello everyone,

Well we got through 2020! I hope that everyone is hanging in there and that their loved ones are safe and that everyone had as good of a holiday season as they could this year. I for one was in bed at 10:30pm on New Years Eve. No regrets.

Kids of Karendow has made some more progress since we last posted in October. In order to speed up production we are also looking to engage more pixel artists to help with building additional art assets. We don’t have a release date announced yet, but we have the entire story of the game mapped out, including mini games, sub quests, and other extras.

Just last week I finished the game’s very first “Quiz Baby”. If anyone played the old DOS version of the game from back in 2000, you might remember a number of these scattered throughout the world. This new version of Kids of Karendow will have them reappear. There will be more of them and they give you better stuff.

Kids of Karendow will feature three types of Quiz Babies:

  1. A Treasure Baby which will give the party a really good treasure if you answer their question correctly. Some times they may be new cooking recipes, or very powerful weapons or armor that cannot be purchased.

  2. A Ninja Baby which will teach the party new combos or new skills.

  3. A Forge Baby which can be used to craft certain equipment.

The game will also have a Quiz Baby Index that tracks the location of all discovered quiz babies and whether or not the question has been successfully answered. It will similar to a Bestiary (which KoK will also feature).

The first town of the game is nearly complete as well. The only things outstanding are the cutscenes and completion of the NPCs. The first town has a considerable amount of story and events that keep the game moving at a rapid and entertaining pace. Much like the original version of Kids of Karendow, this version will continue to keep the action going.

In other news: Unfortunately, our NPC artist was hit hard with COVID. He is recovering in the hospital now and is expected to make a full recovery, but it was scary there for awhile. The Phat Games team is behind him hoping for a speedy recovery!

Lastly, what do we hope to accomplish in 2021 with the game? It would be awesome if we can have an early access version available on Steam by the year’s end. I will not commit to it at this time until we know more how progress will play out this year. Our Steam page is up if you are interested in checking it out. Please note that it states the game is free there. As much as everyone would love for it to be free, it will not be the case. We are still determining how we are going to price it. More information on this to come!

Until our next update (we are targeting once a quarter) stay safe, and we are almost through this terrible time so hang in there everyone!
